NDC repeating mistakes that caused 2016 defeat – Sylvester Mensah

A flagbearer aspirant of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sylvester Mensah has said that the party is repeating some mistakes it made which led to its defeat in the 2016 elections.

He made the comment while challenging reports that 94 NDC Members of Parliament had endorsed former President John Mahama as their preferred candidate to lead the party into the 2020 presidential elections.

Sylvester Mensah, who is the former Executive Director of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) described claims that most of the Minority MPs had endorsed Mahama as embarrassing.

“I am rather scandalized by the embarrassing reports I’ve heard about how some are being cajoled to put their names on paper. I’ve had calls from at least 10 MPs who have asked me to disregard the supposed list. We have not learned from our past, the same things that led to our defeat in 2016 are the same things we seem to be doing. The mood is for change and Sylvester Mensah represents that change.”

It was reported on Tuesday that some 94 National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament, out of the 106, had endorsed former President John Dramani Mahama to lead the party in the 2020 elections.

According to the leader of the 94 MPs, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, who spoke on the sidelines of an event to rally support behind Sammy Gyamfi as the NDC’s National Communications Officer, John Mahama was the only candidate who could lead the party to victory in the next national polls.

A member of the NDC and MP for Yunyoo constituency, Joseph Bipoba Naabu has however claimed publicly that he was deceived into signing the endorsement of John Mahama.

Nii Amasah Namoale, a supporter of Joshua Alabi, another aspiring flagbearer of the NDC has challenged Nii Lante Vandepuye to make public, the list of MPs who have supposedly endorsed John Mahama.
